U.S. futures pointed to a slightly lower open in what would mark the end of a five-day rally in the S&P 500, its best winning streak since September, while investors looked ahead to the latest reading on U.S. inflation.

Risk of a recession in the U.S. hit six-year highs and investors opted for a pause in buying stocks as they turned cautious in the face of financial market volatility, an unresolved trade dispute with China and the U.S. partial government shutdown.

Friday marked the first day that furloughed federal workers would not receive their paycheck with U.S. President Donald Trump contemplating an emergency measure to obtain funding for the wall on the southern border of Mexico.
